Meet the Maker

Eliška Monsportová

Designer & Artist

Taking glass design a little further

Eliška is studying – at Rony Plesl’s glass atelier at the UMPRUM in Prague, in case you are interested – and working on her own projects at the same time. No wonder she spends most of her time in a studio, immersed in the creative process and dreaming about all the beautiful, clean, yet useful objects she would bring to life one day.

Prior to UMPRUM, Eliška studied ceramics design at the art high school in Ostrava. Because she loves to work with glass as well as with clay, she refused to abandon either of them and instead decided to learn how to mix and match different materials together.

When she is not trying to invent new ways to combine materials, she is working on herself in some other way. Whenever she sees something interesting in her surroundings, she sketches it, in case she needed some inspiration later. She travels and meets new people whenever she can – in part for the same reason. But, most importantly, she keeps her eyes and her mind open – at all times.

I think the most descriptive would be: Let me go and I will find beauty.

Definitely looking at the landscape with a mug filled with hot cocoa in your hands.

IF YOU COULD CHOOSE ONE PERSON TO SHOW YOU THEIR ARTISTIC SKILLS (in any art music, painting, glass, pottery, or architectural…)WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

Marcin Rusak. His work fascinates me, it would be nice to take a look under the hood of his work, so to speak.

WHAT OR WHO HAS INSPIRED YOU RECENTLY AND WHY?

Autumn skies, shadows and reflections. They have such a lightness about them.

WHAT MUSIC OR BOOKS ARE YOU LISTENING TO/ READING THESE DAYS? WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE MUSICIANS/WRITERS?

All Them Witches, Talking Heads, Fink, Big Thief. I've read Svatava by Jolanta Trojak, and Stalker.

WHAT ALBUM OR SONG WOULD YOU CHOOSE AS YOUR PERSONAL SOUNDTRACK TO YOUR LIFE OR TO YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?

Call me star by All Them Witches.

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR ART ARE THERE ANY PARTICULAR EMOTIONS THAT COME BACK TO YOUR MIND?

Freedom.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES?

My favorite place is in the national gallery where there are a lot of fossils, the bike route to Okor, the Tatras, Slavia cafe, Artic bakehouse, and the view from Divoká Šárka.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE TRAVEL DESTINATION AND WHY?

I like to travel to the mountains in general. I feel connected to myself, to nature, to the earth. It's also my biggest source of inspiration.
